WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus has announced it will be taking down its tent for the last time.
In a release on its website, the company cited as its reasons for ending its 146-year run as declining ticket sales and new competition in the nation's capital that is demanding global attention.
"We can't compete with the new political circus coming to town next week," said company spokesman P.T. Harnum. "They have more clowns, jugglers, fire-breathers, and knife-throwers. They somehow were able to get Russian bears that we've been unable to use for years. And whereas we phased out elephants from our shows last year, they have so many elephants in the room we can't even keep count."
Representatives of the political circus' transition team criticized Ringling's use of "fake news" in their comments on the size of their elephant herd.
